Merry Christmas 2012!

We are wishing all of you a season of love, health and great music as we visit my former teacher (and your grand-teacher) Taras Gabora in White  Rock, B.C.

The other night we heard a concert with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, play-conducted by “our” Dale Barltrop, the concertmaster and former principal second of the SPCO. He played the Four Seasons both by Vivaldi and Piazzolla. It was sheer joy to hear him again and to watch his unrelenting positive energy.

We are looking forward to our semester recital this Friday evening, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the house. Please arrive in plenty of time to tune and warm up.  Friends and family members are welcome; if you plan to bring all of your cousins,  just let me know so we have enough macaroni and cheese to follow.
Please, no jeans or athletic shoes, but otherwise be comfortable.
Some of you are doing extra work on vibrato. I stumbled upon this curious quote from Carl Flesh’s Art of Violin Playing, written in 1924. He refers to vibrato as
“the unconscious merging of the tone with psychic powers slumbering deep within our subconsciousness.”
And we thought they were wiggles…

At our last performance class I promised to post the Salvatore Sciarrino excerpt I played for you. Nothing else I know sounds like this. I’ll try to gain access to the printed score and maybe one of you will study it. I think we all marvel at it! The violinist is Georg Monch. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m7rDBv-8Tw&feature=BFa&list=PL3A98DD917EE74F06&index=18

Dear Students and Parents,

What a terrific performance class today! As promised, here are the links to the historical, tradition-based examples for Bloch’s Nigun, Monti’s Czardas, and Bacewicz’s Oberek.

http://beta.chabad.org/therebbe/livingtorah/player_cdo/aid/323922/jewish/Niggun-Hachono.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuBnLH4tnJU&feature=related This is a curious film  of Polish folk dancers on a ship in 1963 dancing the Oberek.

The Original Village Music from the Upper-Mures Region project discs are out of print, and I can’t find examples on Youtube. But there is interesting background in the editorial review at this Amazon link:

http://www.amazon.com/New-Patria-Series-Vol-Upper-Mures/dp/B00294MYZY

I’d be happy to lend you my copy. I’d also be glad to lend our copies of the following books. It is a list from the Brain-Pickings website of recommended books about music, emotions, and the brain.

Happy learning!

Dear Students and Parents,

I know I’m preaching to the choir, but you may be interested in this New York Times article that appeared a couple of days ago:

Since we’re in Back-To-School mode, check out the good Dominant string prices at SHARmusic.com until Oct. 19.

I also wanted to let you know about an upcoming concert which will feature two violinist brothers from India. They play in an entirely different way from violinists in our world of western art music. I think it would be terrific for the students to hear this great playing in another fascinating tradition.

The concert will be on Oct. 28, 2012 at HHH Cowles Auditorium. For more info, go to

We are all off to a wonderful start. I’ll see you in lessons.

My best,

Lucia
