May Class Newsletter, Vol. 10, No. 6

Dear Parents of Newbies,

I’ve found a fantastic article about home practice. It is written by a veteran of Suzuki parent training, Joanne Bath.
I always hope that I cover the the important bases in our first meetings at the beginning of studies, but it is always valuable to hear from other voices. Learning effective practice is an ongoing project. Please take a few minutes to check it out.

Tomorrow we’ll have lots of Bach in class, including some unaccompanied movements by older students.
I hope you’ve enjoyed the short story I handed out in your lessons this week.
I’ll see you tomorrow, Sat. Jan. 28. We’ll start at 10 a.m. but I’ll rehearse the beginner class at 9:30.

Happy practicing,
Lucia

Congratulations to all of you who played in the Mary West Competition last Sunday! You all performed beautifully. Meriel played the Introduction and Polonaise by Bohm, Imala played the Vitali Chaccone, and Alec played solo Bach and the first movement of the Khatchaturian Concerto.

Please come and hear the recital on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church.
Alec will be playing solo Bach on the program.
Imala and Alec both received honorable mentions.

Here is a link to a photo of Alec playing at a school function for Veterans’ Day. Alec attends the Main Street School of the Performing Arts in Hopkins.

The new class will play what you have been learning.

Saturdays 10 a.m.:
Sept. 24, Oct. 29, Dec. 3

Our class recital will be on Friday evening, Dec. 9 here at the ranch. Invite friends and family.
Time TBA.

While you have your calendars out, please note that I will be out of town from Sept. 29 through Oct. 4.

Happy practicing,

Happy Autumn 2011, Parents and Students, new and old!

It has been wonderful meeting you and seeing you regulars.
For those of you who are not new to me this fall, I want to remind you about the upcoming ASTA Mary West Competition.
The application is due on Oct. 8.
My ASTA number is 31169.

Here is a link to the details:
mnsota.org/solocompetition

I also want to let you know about a Dominant String sale advertised by House of Note. It’s always advisable to have a spare set, even if you might be changing violin sizes. Most places will trade you up a string size.
Many of you need “fall cleaning” on your equipment. (How is your bowhair? You know who you are.)

Stay tuned for the monthly dates of our performance classes and recital.

My best,
Lucia

May Class Newsletter, Vol.9, No.4

Hi, Students and Parents,
A belated “congratulations!” for your spring recital. I couldn’t have been more proud, and I think you all are proud of your jobs well done.
This is my last post of Vol. 9. I’ll see most of you at Bravo.
In case there is any confusion about the blog: the last three entries needed to be parked as home posts so I could link them to the documents for new class parents. I know that all of my current students have this information in some form or another, so you can disregard those posts.
My very best,
Lucia

Lucia May Teaching Studio

I have maintained a home studio in the Twin Cities since 2001. My approach to teaching could be described as an amalgamation of traditional violin pedagogy and the Suzuki philosophy.

I believe strongly in seeing my students twice a week. My weekly fee for beginners is $45.00. This includes a weekly 30 minute lesson, and group class every Saturday at 9:30, monthly performance classes, a solo recital and rehearsals once each semester. In some cases students come for two private lessons weekly. The fee stays the same.

You only pay for the lessons you take. I make every effort to make up missed lessons in the same week in the event of illness, emergency, or inclement weather. Scholarships are available based on need and merit. The fee structure and underlying philosophy are described in more detail in Newsletter Vol.6, No.4. (Jan. 6, 2008 archive)

Younger students need to have a parent observe the private and group classes, and supervise their listening to their tapes. You’ll be their daily practice helper!

Before we’d begin lessons, you and your child would observe others’ lessons. I would teach you from the very beginning how to practice with your child. Tape recorders and video cameras can be useful. I may require reading for those unfamiliar with early childhood learning. As your child progresses and matures, less parental involvement will be needed.

Please feel free to call with any questions. I take my commitment to you as your teacher very seriously, and hope that all applying students, regardless of level, will echo that seriousness.

From 1995 to 1999 she was the violinist in the St. Louis based contemporary ensemble Synchronia, with whom she performed extensively. In the late seventies and early eighties Ms. May was actively engaged as an orchestra and chamber musician in the St. Louis area. In 1984 she received her Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the St. Louis Conservatory of Music. She also studied at Case Western Reserve University and Southern Illinois University.

Her teachers included Daniel Majeske, concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra, Taras Gabora of the Oberlin Conservatory, and Fryderyk Sadowski of the St. Louis Conservatory.
