May Class Newsletter, Vol. 8, No.7

Congratulations to all of you on a beautiful recital on Sunday! There has clearly been a lot of thoughtful work and good progress this winter.

We have some times approaching in which we’ll be out of town. Please read this carefully:

I will not be teaching from Sat. Feb. 13 through Wed., Feb. 17. I will also be gone from Feb. 21 through 23, Sunday through Tuesday.

I will be teaching on Thursday Feb. 18, 19, and 20, so please call to reschedule lessons.

On Wed., March 10 I arrive at noon from a one day trip, so Abbey’s lesson can stay, but Katia and Anna can reschedule.

The first week of April may be tricky, but I’ll wait until our plans become clearer.

I also want to let you know about some upcoming SPCO concerts:

Ruggiero Allifranchini will be perfroming the Bruch Concerto on  March 5 and 6 with Roberto Abbado conducting.

March 19 and 21, Dale Barltrop, our outgoing principal 2nd violinist, will be playing the Schumann Concerto with Roberto Abbado.

Practice well.

P.S. Some of you need to tighten and rosin your bow more, you know who you are.

Happy New Year, Students and Parents!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful holiday break, and I look forward to your lessons this week.

Meriel and Anna can rehearse that day here at the house at 9 a.m. before class which begins at 10 a.m. Please call Claudia to set up your rehearsals.

Also for your calendars:

Dear Students and Parents,

A belated congratulations to all of you who participated in the ASTA Mary West Competition. Alec Witherspoon performed Mozart Concerto in G Major at the recital as a winner in the Intermediate Division, and Katia Tesarczyk received an honorable mention.

Here are important calendar changes. Since I was in Cleveland and did not teach last weekend, I would like to teach this Saturday even though it will be Thanksgiving weekend. Please email me or call with time windows.

We will be out of town from Dec. 6 to Dec. 20. This is a great time to rehearse and have lessons with Claudia. I hope she has received all of your piano parts and appointment times.

We will have our next performance class on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10:00 a.m.

Our dress rehearsal will be Feb. 6, Saturday at 10:00 a.m., and our concert will be the next day, Sun. Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. here at the ranch. Please make a note of all of these changes from our last posting.

Bruce and I wish you all a beautiful Thanksgiving.  It means a great deal to us that you are in our lives.

The rest of this posting is news of an extraordinary event taking place at the University of Minnesota soon. Irvine Arditti, founder and leader of the Arditti String Quartet and an important contemporary violinist is giving a concert at the Ted Mann Concert Hall at the University of
Minnesota on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7:30pm; the concert is free of charge.
The celebrated pianist Noriko Kawai will be joining him on this program, which includes some wonderful music by Iannis Xenakis, James Dillon, and Salvatore Sciarrino. It’s been many years since he’s been in the Twin Cities, so it’s a great opportunity for new music enthusiasts in the area.
Please come, and feel free to pass this message on to anyone who might be interested!

P.S. There are other events with Arditti taking place over the Dec. 4-7
long weekend, please see below for more details. Also, be on the lookout
for upcoming new music concerts in the area sponsored (in part or whole)
by CMW, including

Wed., Dec. 9 – Mario Caroli (flute) & Alice Teyssier (flute, voice),
Sundin Hall, Hamline University, 8:30pm (works by Sciarrino and Dillon).

Fri., Dec. 11 – CMW semester concert, 12:00pm, Ferguson Hall TBD (probably
room 85) (works by Feldman and Xenakis).

Wed., Feb. 10, 2010 – Rohan de Saram (cello) and Noriko Kawai (piano), Ted
Mann, U of M (works by Berio, Dillon, Zimmermann, others), as part of a
Consortium for the Study of the Asias (CSA) event.

Minnesota, the Contemporary Music Workshop is a constellation of

May Class Newsletter, Vol.8, No.1

Hi Students and Parents,

It feels great to dust off the old blog! I think we’re off to a great fall.

For those of you entering the Mary West Competition, please remember that the postmark deadline for your application is Oct. 2.  The form can be downloaded from www.MNSOTA.org, or you can make a copy from mine at the house.  My ASTA ID number is 31169.

Claudia is unable to play for the competition and October performance class.  We are very happy that Kerri Lejeune has agreed to play with all of you for the competition and our performance class on Sat., Oct. 24., at 10 a.m.  She would like you to email her as soon as possible at kerri9007@msn.com to make arrangements to rehearse with her alone once in the week of Oct. 19.  Please ask her about getting the piano music to her. Directions to her house are on her website: www.ensemblepianist.com  Her phone number is 763-785-9007

As always, I will cover the pianist’s time for the work you do here at the house for class, and she will handle her fees for private rehearsals and the competition with you directly.

Meriel and Anna are not meeting with Claudia yet and won’t be in the Mary West, but you’ll perform in class each month with the others. Details when I see you.

Here are two more class dates : Dec. 5 and Jan. 9 at 10 a.m.

Our class recital will be Jan. 10, time TBA

Happy practicing (now!)

Dear Parents and Students,

Here is a link to the Caringbridge site that we have used for these many months to keep friends and family up to date about Bruce’s health. We have posted Bruce’s announcement of his retirement to the SPCO Board today, and we have inserted the press release issued by the orchestra.

He’ll go to any lengths to get you guys to practice!

With continuing thanks for your support.

May Class Newsletter, Vol. 6, No. 13

Dear Parents and Students,

Just a few items about our recital on Sunday, June 1. Our concert will begin at 2:30. I will be able to enter the hall at 2 p.m., so please come to tune and get settled in plenty of time.

Following the recital we will have juice and cookies in the gathering space. If you could all bring a dozen cookies or the equivalent, we should have a nice party. I’ll bring the juice!

Please keep in mind that this weekend is also a big childrens’ festival downtown, so be sure to leave extra time for parking. Remember that in addition to street parking is the Lawson ramp, the Lowry ramp, the lot behind the SPCO Center, and the Ordway Rivercenter ramp. There is a map link on the calendar page on this blog.

A good idea is to check that the kids can play comfortably in the clothes they will be wearing. There is nothing more annoying than realizing at the last moment that you need an extra strap, or that you can’t walk in your high heels. Please have hair pinned back if it will otherwise fall forward.

Please no athletic shoes or jeans. Remember to bring your cameras; we need to update the blog! Please remind the younger ones about “being a good audience member.”

This will be fun. See you soon, and have a great time reaping the rewards of a semester of hard work.

Cheers, Lucia
