May Violin Class Parents’ Guidelines

May Violin Class Parents’ Guidelines

General home environment:

  • Our success depends to a great extent on the relationship between you and your child. As a parent, you are the direct link between your child and me as the teacher. You are the daily teacher regardless of whether or not you have a background in music. I’ll help you become the best home teacher possible.
  • Create a home environment where music is enjoyed and appreciated. In addition to the Suzuki CD, choose other recordings to play repeatedly.
  • It is the parent’s and teacher’s job to create interest.
  •  Attend concerts. If an entire concert is too much for a young child, leave at intermission, or between movements of a rehearsal. Watch DVDs about musicians, concerts, operas.
  • Play the Suzuki Book 1 CD as if it were wallpaper.  Have a copy of the CD available in each of your child’s environments: bedroom, car, computer, home sound system.

Lesson time:

  • Prepare your child for lessons with a good night’s sleep and full stomach.
  • At the beginning, it is likely that I’ll teach the parent to learn the first violin tasks, even if on the child’s violin. This will be helpful in practicing with your child.
  • Observing others’ lessons is recommended and encouraged.
  • Bring the same notebook and take notes of tasks at every lesson. Feel free to use a recording device.
  • Make every effort not to miss lessons except in case of illness or emergency.
  • Don’t “help” with behavior that makes you uncomfortable. (Chances are good that I’ve seen it before and already know how to handle it!) Remember, only one teacher at a time.
  • Don’t assume that I don’t see something that I haven’t commented on.
  • Discuss the lesson and practice with your child as soon as possible to reinforce it.
  • The teaching and learning process, although game oriented, is not arbitrary.

Home practice time:

  • Be responsible for starting practice time. It should be part of your daily routine, but also an “occasion.” Sometimes all it takes is to start playing yourself.
  • Set regular, short, practice sessions. Be consistent and practice daily. At the beginning, 3 to 5 min. three times daily is more effective than one long session.
  • Try to end before your child wants to end.
  • Become accustomed to repetition and continued use of the same repertoire. Children usually do not tire of repetition unless others show boredom in their remarks, manner, or tone of voice. The best way to avoid this is to constantly search for new ideas that will keep both of you interested.
  • Phrase your remarks positively. Depersonalize your comments. Say, “your third finger needs to be higher” rather than “can’t you get your third finger in tune?”
  • Plan home concerts for friends and visitors.
  • Practicing should never be associated with conflict.
  • Avoid rewards; they can pervert motives. The process of learning is joyful, a reward in itself.
  • Please do not introduce new pieces before me.

Dear Students and Parents,

As I believe you all know, we have had to make a few changes for the next couple of months, for the happy reason that Bruce would like to take a trip for his big 6-0.

Our next performance class will be on Saturday, April 2, from 10 to 11:30.
Our final performance class for the semester will be on Saturday, April 23, which will be our dress rehearsal for our recital, which we’ve moved to Sunday, May 1, at 6 p.m. We’ll follow the recital with pizza.

Please mark these changes in your calendar. As always, I will teach when I am in town. Please double check your rehearsals, lessons, and piano music with Claudia.
We’ll continue to meet every Saturday morning as a class from 10 to 11. Please memorize your Vivaldi, and all solos that you’ll be playing on April 2nd.

Please note that the application and dvd deadline for Bravo! is May 10. It will be convenient to use a recording of your child from our dress rehearsal and/or recital for the application.
Bravo! will be from June 12 to July 10, 2011. The link is http://www.music.umn.edu/Bravo

May Class Newsletter, Vol. 9, No.2

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Fall 2010!

It’s time to start scheduling lesson times, so please send me your possible time windows. I also have some dates for performance classes, our recital, and other events for you to jot down. Please schedule your theory lessons and rehearsals with Claudia.

Claudia and I can give performance classes on the following Saturdays:

September 25, October 23, and November 6 (dress rehearsal).

Our recital will be Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. We’re trying to keep your holidays a bit simpler!

I am planning to have Saturday classes in the same format as last spring, from 10 to 11 a.m. Undoubtedly there will be a Cleveland trip because of my parents’ ill health or other unforeseen events.

Also, I hope you’ll all participate in the ASTA Mary West Competition. The application form can be downloaded at http://www.MNSOTA.org. The application deadline is Sept. 25. The Competition date is Oct. 24, and the Winners’ Recital is Oct. 31.

That is all for now. Enjoy this beautiful MN weather!

May Class Newsletter, Vol. 9, No.1

Hi Students and Parents,

I hope you are all relaxing and enjoying the post-Bravo summer. I am very proud of each of you for your improvement and performances.

Bruce and I have dived into house projects which involve floors and walls. We’ve moved to the lower level and had the upstairs furniture and contents moved into a pod at the front of the house.

I thought I’d take a quick trip to Cleveland to check on my parents as the house is being put back together, so I’ll be gone from this Wednesday, July 21 to the following Monday, July 26. I’d be happy to start teaching those of you who are in town upon my return. Please let me know so we can set up a time to meet.

All best,
Lucia

May Class Newsletter, Vol. 8, No. 10

Hello Everyone,

I mentioned to some of you that I’ll be giving a class in Pittsburgh this Friday and I won’t be back in time for Saturday teaching. I will teach anyone on Sunday, so for those of you who can make the switch, please let me know what time will work. Those of you who can’t come Sunday, April 25, I’ll see if I can fit you in another time.

I’ll teach this Wednesday, which is my final week of the changed schedule, but I will need to reschedule Abbey and Meriel who were to come this Thursday. I am sorry for all of the schedule changes. It seems to be the season. But after this week, we’ll be home free for a long time.

Those of you planning on Bravo this summer, please be aware that the deadline for your application is May 10.  Here is the application:  music.umn.edu/bravo/About.php

I also wanted you to know about a website I found, http://www.everynote.com which sells tons of violin music in the public domain at a low cost for you to download.

Congratulations to Alec for being second runner-up in the Minnesota Sinfonia competition, junior division.

Have a good week!
Lucia

A note from Claudia:

I have a couple of performances coming up that I wanted to let you know of.

April 7 is a performance at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the U of M campus with violinist Adrian Anantawan. This program includes a solo Bach partita, Debussy Sonate and Gerswhin/Heifetz Preludes. Adrian is a young, rising concert violinist. I’m sure that the young violinists on my email list will be particularly inspired by this. This is a free concert.

Here is the link: https://events.umn.edu/001673

The link below is for my performance on May 2 at Antonello Recital Hall at the MacPhail Center for Music. This is a ticketed event, and it sells pretty quickly, so if you are interested, call or visit the Minnesota Orchestra Box Office website soon. On this concert, I will be performing with my husband, Arek Tesarczyk and Osmo Vanska, (Minnesota Orchestra’s music director) who will be playing his clarinet for the event. The piece is the wonderful Brahms Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Cello.

Have a great week,
Claudia Chen
